Urban Redevelopment Borgo Foce

The project concerns the redevelopment of a valuable urban area between the mouth of the Caramagna Creek and Largo Varese, at the “Domenico Moriani” waterfront promenade connection. To the north, the intervention is bounded by the building slat of the typical seaside village. The total area involved is 2,065 square meters.

Currently, the area is crossed by an asphalt driveway, with sidewalks made of Luserna stone. On the sea side there is a stone wall with a brick cover, flower beds edged in pre-stressed concrete with irrigated native vegetation, and spaces used for parking vehicles and commercial activities.

Main objectives and interventions

The intervention aims to enhance the area as a pedestrian and gathering space, minimizing vehicular traffic (limited to driveway access and loading/unloading) and improving urban enjoyment.

Spaces and Mobility

  • Traffic reorganization with pedestrian predominance, maintaining only access for residents and authorized vehicles.
  • Newer parking areaswider, flanked by curvilinear green spaces.
  • Removing bituminous pavementto replace it with fine pavements:
    • Wood plankson magatelli along the south side.
    • Verezzo stone (dim. 40×60 cm, thickness 6 cm) for the rest of the area.

Greenery and street furniture

  • Level and flush flowerbeds, with wooden covers (12 cm width).
  • Soil clearing up to 80 cmto improve the soil and encourage new plantings to take root.
  • New trees on the sea side: Morus platanifolia (height 2 m, trunk circumference 20-25 cm), alternating with wooden and steel seats.
  • Interior relaxation spaceswith undulating benches and shaded areas.
  • Irrigation system integrated and vegetation consisting of:
    • Palms and trees typical of the Mediterranean scrub.
    • Shrubs such as lavender, myrtle, rosemary, sage, arbutus and various species of cysts.

Lighting and finishing

  • New low-power LED lighting system, with lights recessed into the low wall on the south side for a discreet and integrated brightness.
  • On the north side, pole-mounted LED floodlightswill illuminate the area in a functional but restrained manner.
  • Demolition of the brick coverof the south wall, replaced with wooden laths with an average width of 60 cm.

Value of intervention

The area being redeveloped is now a landmark for citizens and tourists, but is in a critical condition due to the overlapping of multiple functions in a small space. The project aims to return urban quality, comfort and identityto this stretch of coastline, through natural materials, modern furniture and native vegetation, to create a living, sustainable and harmonious space.
